A 2020 review published in Complementary Therapies in Clinical Practice looked at how aromatherapy affected pain and anxiety during childbirth. The findings? Essential oils especially lavender, clary sage, and peppermint were associated with reduced pain, lower anxiety, and an overall more positive birth experience for many women.


While more research is still needed, especially larger scale studies, these results are promising and show how aromatherapy could be a helpful tool in your labour prep.

🌿 Clary Sage – sometimes used to support contractions (only when full-term!) 

🌿 Peppermint – can help with nausea or overheating. 🌿 Frankincense – grounding and comforting.

🌿 Rose – emotionally supportive and soothing.
